Our forebears are more than worthy of our
admiration. Mine were Italian. Leaving their homelands and settling
in a New World, they endured the hardships of acclimation and helped
transform their adopted country as they became Americans. These soft
sculptures were modeled after images of the early Italians, but peoples of
all nations, languages and cultures have arrived on our shores looking for
a new life.

| Donkeys and mules were a big part of the agricultural workload in Italy. Every farm had them to help carry their gear. We still find use for them today, and sometimes just love having them around. Their eyes are so expressive and kind. | |||

|
The Zampognari are Italian bagpipe players, shepherds who came down from the mountains to play in the nearby villages, particularly at the nativity scenes the Italians loved to display at Christmas. They would also travel house-to-house playing for food or any money they could collect to help their meager existence as shepherds. The tradition continues today at Christmas festivals. ________________________________
